Had a great time on Tuesday at one of the convalescent/elderly care homes we visit. My favorite conversation was with a wizened 72-year-old amputee with an alert mind and a competitive streak. He’s a cynical unbeliever. He’s always shooting geography questions at us as we walk by and loves to trip us up. He loves to be difficult, but under the surface seems desperate for answers. He won’t stay on one subject long, but asks wonderful questions. This past Tuesday we were talking about the earth (he loves National Geographic channel) and I mentioned that when Jesus Christ returns He will renovate the earth. He started thumping his head with his bent finger and dramatically demanded, “Yes, but will He renovate this????” A great opening for a scriptural response.
And there were other blessing that day. One staunchly Orthodox lady who had been warned away from us, showed signs of thawing out a little. Another lady, who devotedly reads her prayer book has been hungrily reading the New Testament ever since we bought her an Orthodox version. She says she loves it and has already read from the beginning of Matthew to midway through Mark. May she fall in love with Jesus from its pages! One curious bit of conversation with her that shows the contrast in our concepts of the church: I asked her if the priest from the corner church ever visits the residents of the home. She was completely dumbfounded, saying: “Why would he do that?” Maybe if she keeps reading the New Testament she will discover the answer for herself!
